Reese - Just Want Another Chance

The low, rumbling reese bass begins at around the sixteen minute mark.

In 1988, Kevin Saunderson released a song titled "Just Want Another Chance," featuring a bass made on his Casio CZ-5000 that would go on to influence musicians in the jungle and early drum and bass genre communities. The sound itself came to evolve over time as it propagated to other genre circles.

The early reese bass was a deep, low square-based sub bass that maintained a rumbling texture, usually attained with a chorus or modulated panning that was dulled with the use of a low pass filter. Modernized versions of the reese bass would incorporate portmanteau or hand-made pitch bends to allow the synth to glide between notes. In EDM communities when basses became more prominent, the reese would take on a buzzier lead bass synth noise by simply shedding its low pass filter and EQing around the drums.

Recreations[]

The early reese bass can be made in any synthesizer, but the modern version requires more work or a more sophisticated synth that can do pitch glides.
